Our generous sized lots and rural residential zoning allow us to have almost any kind of pet. If you plan to live here, be prepared to have dogs, cats, horses, chickens, donkeys and more, including their usual noises, as your neighbors.
Pet ownership comes with the same responsibilities here as anywhere. Laws regarding pets and livestock are strictly enforced. Local ranchers and homeowners have a legal right to shoot to kill any domestic or wild animal that threatens their livestock or other domestic animals.
Wildlife is a serious threat to pets of all sizes. Be prepared to provide
appropriate, safe shelter for your pets, night and day, and plan to keep dogs, cats
and other small pets indoors at night. Chicken pens should be covered to protect from hawks,
eagles and owls and nighttime shelters should have cement floors or other
barriers so wild critters
cannot dig into them.
"Free range" laws apply to livestock only - those animals which are
raised as a business - they do not apply to pets.
We are required to keep our pets on our own property and/or properly restrained.
